New Album Release: Paper Daisies

Originating from Clemson, South Carolina, Tayler Bucich of Paper Daisies released his first album In and out the Window on March 30th. We had the opportunity to ask Bucich questions about his new project and this album.

What inspired you to move to this stage of your music career?

I got into music and recording when I was 20 because it gave all of my emotions a very clear therapeutic outlet. Nothing makes me happier than writing and recording, so I guess that would be the inspiration for all of this. Chasing happiness.

With this being your first release under Paper Daisies, what is the significance of this album?

It’s the start of something fresh and new. With purpose. I have a big plan for how my Paper Daisies albums will feed off of each other.

Can you tell us a little bit about your songwriting process for this album? Where did you find inspiration to write these songs?

The songwriting process for In and out the Window was extremely personal. I filled an old black notebook front and back with thoughts, questions, statements, poems, conceptual ideas. I’ve been at odds with myself recently. The last year has really stressed me out and made me feel purposeless. But no matter what I always have music. So I decided to make this project about just that. Having a therapeutic outlet to go to.

A little passage from that notebook says: “These eyes are windows. Press play and listen to my soul. Go in and out the window.” In and out the Window is also a reference to a children’s book that teaches kids how to play music. I liked that because I feel like a child in the world of music.

Major musical influences for In and out the Window?

I found a lot of inspiration from the existentialism that Loving spews out in every song. I loved the raw recordings and genuine lyrics of Elliot Smith. I was extremely inspired by the late 60s sunshine pop movement. And of course, forever and always, Brian Wilson.

How is this album different from anything else you’ve released?

I think there is a conscious effort to present these songs with more concrete structure. I had access to an actual drum kit for the first time in my life. So really, long story short, I had the ability to do whatever I wanted when I wanted. I could truly create with no boundaries for the first time.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never listened to you before?

Hahaaa! I have a lot of practice doing this. I usually say something like “I hunker down in my bedroom and I write songs about being alive, the ups and downs.” And then I usually give a little disclaimer “Could be kinda weird! I don’t know what you normally listen to!” If they need a genre I usually say “Experimental bedroom pop” which sounds like a lot of fun things.

What message do you want to convey to our readers about this album?

I’m always at odds with wanting to tell what my albums are about…but if I had to say something real short and sweet I’d say: You never know what someone is going through, or who they might end up growing into. People have an incredible capacity to change, or to be shaped by their surroundings, both in a positive and negative way. Be kinder. Smile more. The world is like a mirror, you’ll feel it come right back to you. I promise!

Final Thoughts

Bucich released this album when the world needed it the most. During a time of uncertainty and confusion, the songs on In and out the Window offer a sense of calmness and security about where we are and where we can go from there. It’s like a big hug from someone you love and you know that they’ll never let go. This album is reminiscent of warm drinks, dried flowers, and baked goods. A cozy feeling, ya know. Like everything is going to be alright.

We’ll link the album on Spotify below and make sure to follow @daisiespaper on Instagram for any future updates! Thank you again Tayler!

Stay groovy!

New Album Release: The Dune Flowers

November 22, 2019– Nashville natives, The Dune Flowers released their highly anticipated sophomore album today, and we couldn’t be more excited. We first met The Dune Flowers when they played our music festival, Hyp-Fest, in September. We had the chance to interview Oscar Lars and Tyler Drager of The Dune Flowers, and discuss everything about their newest self-titled album, The Dune Flowers.

How is this album different from anything else that you have released?

Oscar: We could focus on it as an album, a collection. It also sounds more alive, which I think is cool.

Tyler: In the studio, it was really fun. We were able to record to just play drums and bass at the same time. We were able to feel it out more, which was way different from what we did before.

Oscar: The old songs were written just for the album, with these we kind of just came up with them, because we liked them, not just for an album.

Tyler: We also sound more ourselves in this. In the one before, we were trying to sound like something we didn’t really know what it was. We honed in a little bit more and we sound like how we would play like in a living room.

What was the process of making this album?

Oscar: Over the last year, we started piecing together, starting with the demos, putting those together and then slowly layering them until the last two months, when we got a lot of the final tracks finished.

Tyler: I definitely feel like all the songs grew over the past year and a half. The song “She’s Wild” was written two years ago and we didn’t have time to put it on the first album, so know it’s on the second one and it’s grown over time. We start writing songs and they coincidentally fit together, rather than the first one [album]. We had them [songs] and we started to record them how we play them live.

Oscar: It gave us time to practice them. We would play the first album, play the songs for a little bit, kept putting in the new ones, we just got the chance to play them a bunch.

Tyler: We went into it as “Alright, we have these cords, let’s try to figure out how to make the rest of the song.” but with these we went in and recorded the entire song in one day. The process was a little weird because we recorded the drums, guitar, bass, and vocals in the studio and then we would come back to my house and record stuff there, and then we would go back to the studio and mix it. It was a lot of back and forth between the studio and our house.

Oscar: It felt like there was always a different spot.

Where did you find inspiration when writing these songs?

Tyler: Everyone always says that it [inspiration] comes from your daily life and I feel that that is true but also there’s love, there’s hate, there’s feelings like that in songs. Oscar would write a really crazy song and I would be like “Oh man, I got to write a really crazy song too, because Oscar’s song rips! I’ve got to write one just as good as that!” I feel like there was a lot of balancing off each other too to write songs.

Tyler: With a couple of them [songs] too, we would just be jamming and practicing for a show and warming up and we would come up with songs. It just came out of nowhere. We weren’t setting out to write a bunch of songs for an album, it was like they came over time and I feel that that helped a lot because we got to pick and choose what songs we wanted and didn’t want on the album.

Oscar: I feel like we beat around the bush with that, but I feel that”s the best way to do it.

Tyler: My musical inspirations for the first couple of songs that we wrote, were the Southern California rock bands like, The Growlers, Allah-Las, and Mystic Braves. I was really into Twin Peaks and the “garage sound”. That influenced me a lot as far as how everything sounds. Oscar has been playing a lot of piano, there are two new tracks where he plays the piano.

Oscar: Playing the piano has definitely been a big inspiration of mine. Writing on the piano is a whole different story.

How would you describe your music/this album to someone who has never listened to you before?

Oscar: Well there’s fourteen [songs] to pick from so if you don’t like one, you’ve got thirteen others to choose from.

Tyler: I feel like all the songs are different from each other, they’re a little Western, they’re a little psychedelic, they’re a little rock and roll, and they’re a little garage-y. We wanted to make a rock and roll album, but there are influences from all the other music we listen to. It’s a new rock and roll.

What message do you want to convey to our readers about this new album?

Oscar: I’m not trying to say that there’s this big sound change or anything like that, but take the album for the songs, not the genre.

Tyler: I feel like there’s so much clutter in the music world, like people wanting to be on the radio. There’s nothing wrong with that, but on this [the album], we set out to make something we hope to be listened to in 10, 15 years. I don’t know if that sounds pretentious, but I want it to stick around. We just want to do our own thing and we hope the people really like it.

Oscar: I want them to know that we appreciate the beauty in simplicity.

Final Thoughts

We highly recommend turning this album on full blast and dancing around to it in your kitchen. The Dune Flowers’ rock-and-roll tunes will have you jumping out of your seat and dancing all night long. We’re so glad that we had the chance to get some insight on the process of this ‘new age’ rock album.

You can now stream the album on all music platforms, and follow their Instagram account (@theduneflowers) to stay up to date on all their releases and upcoming shows.

Hypnotic Hangout: Briston Maroney

‘Hangin Round’ at taco bell

It was 1AM in Asheville, North Carolina and a cool breeze swept through the Taco Bell parking lot. The purple fluorescent lights lit up the sidewalk. The only noise was the passing of cars, and Briston Maroney clearing his throat as he sat down next to us on the curb. After playing a packed show at the Mothlight, we were able to sit down with the Knoxville native to get a little more insight on Maroney and his music.

We briefly discussed his tattoos and their stories before jumping into our real questions. Pointing to his black inked outline of Texas, he laughed, “This one is probably my favorite, by far”.

Of course, we needed to know where his passion for music is rooted, and what inspires him to write such personal verses. He adjusted his navy blue hat and scooted a little closer to us, “My grandpa turned me onto a lot of country music when I was younger like Waylon Jennings and Townes Van Zandt,” he laughed before saying, ” I was and still am into that kind of folkier country music. I’ve always wanted to be a cowboy. I have the tattoo and the boots so maybe by 25 I’ll either become a cowboy or just hang up the hat”.

When you listen to the “Caroline” singer, you almost feel as if he opened up your journal or crept into your thoughts and just wrote songs about your worst break-up or deepest fears. We asked,

“So, we want to know about the song writing process but more specifically the emotions that are going into every line. Do you have to be in love to write a song about being in love? Do you have to be going through something difficult in order to write on that experience? Is it more based on feelings or more expeirence based?”

He nodded his head silently, looking at the gravel beneath our feet. “I feel like songs that last and that are genuine are true feelings. I think you can write a love song about being in love in the moment, but I believe you have to have felt those feelings and be wanting to feel those feelings. For me, it’s hard to not make it personal. There are amazing artist who have the ability to just pull words that make sense without having to feel all of that [feelings] in the moment. I just can’t.”

‘SMALL TALK’

Maroney recently went on a UK tour with the Wallows, we were curious to know how this might have shifted his career as a whole, “How do you feel this affected your career and was it a big stepping stone for you?” Maroney responded with “Short term and long term it changed a lot of things for us. It was really important for us as people.” Maroney revealed that he feels closer to his band mates because of these experiences on the road.

Indiana

Maroney released his third album, Indiana on May 17th, 2019. So of course we had to ask, “What does Indiana mean to you compared to the other albums you’ve released?” Maroney went on to explain It was the first one they signed with Atlantic Recording Co.

“It was four songs that I had written in a period of time when I was living with my mom in Florida. Those songs were about living there with her and moving back to Nashville. It was the end of an era and it was an awesome experience to make.” He continued with “I feel like it was the first step towards speaking for what I want to stand for.”

Desert island bands

After much consideration, Maroney carefully chose these three musicians to be stranded on a deserted island with:

  1. Neil Young
  2. Jimi Hendrix
  3. Graham Nash

A special message from briston

Going into this interview we knew that Maroney is an enlightened person and we wanted to convey any messages that he wanted to give to our readers. “I want people to feel relieved when they listen to this music to know that someone else is feeling the way that they feel. Life is complicated and people experience really intense things. I want it to be a symbol of sharing intense experiences {his music}.”

“And finally what do you want your listeners to know about anything?” Briston smiled and replied “My phone number.” We both laughed thinking he was joking. But then he went on to say “865-291-7761, you can text me if you want. Life is pretty short and I’m trying to put my feelings to the side for a little bit, and be nice to everyone.” He started laughing and said genuinely ” I want them to know my effing phone number.”

What’s next?

Briston Maroney is currently on his first head-lining tour in Europe and America and has recently released a new single “Chattanooga” which you can find on all music streaming platforms.

A Hypnotic Hangout: Bedon

“Untitled”

Greenville August 9th- Bedon Lancaster and his band were getting ready for their show at the Radio Room. While on their tour through the south, we had the opportunity to sit down and talk with the “Lazy Eyes” singer about his music.

Not “Tired Tired Tired of Talking”

When asked about his major musical influences, Lancaster replied with some of his favorite artists: Pinegrove, Bon Iver, and Whitney. He then went on to explain why these artists were so unique to him and how they play an important role in creating his music. “They’re very formidable songwriters with amazing music behind it. I love music that you can just get lost in.”

Lancaster explained that besides his musical influences, he writes most of his songs based around relationships and the people around him. He revealed that he takes in the energy surrounding him, internalizes it, and uses it for his music.

Band on the run

Because of his crazy touring schedule, the “Mooky Blaylock” singer has played a variety of shows. Ranging from house shows to college shows, Lancaster let us in on his favorite type of crowd to perform for. “I love any show with an audience who is there to participate. We’re going to do our thing no matter what, we’ll still have our show, but having people jump up down and go crazy is what really makes the show.”

Deserted Island Bands

Lancaster didn’t hesitate when we asked him what his three deserted island bands would be. With his diverse taste in music he replied with:

  1. Pinegrove
  2. Bon Iver
  3. Originally Sturgill Simpson but wisely changed to Led Zeppelin

“look how We’ve grown”

We have been anticipating new music from the “Untitled” singer for quite some time now, and he revealed to us that he is expecting to release an album in February of next year. Coincidentally the date that Lancaster has chosen is a palindrome which in our opinion makes it worth the wait.

Final Thoughts

Bedon is an artist who isn’t afraid to experiment with new sounds and outlets. He proves this by utilizing various instruments in his music and performances. Reigning from Oxford, Mississippi, this group puts on an amazing show while goofing around and smiling the whole time.

Lancaster wants his listeners to know that you can call him Don or Be-don. He laughed and said, “It’s pronounced Bedon, but I don’t really care. You can call me whatever you want.”

Make sure to follow Bedon and his crew on Instragram and social media to stay updated with any upcoming tours and releases!

A Hypnotic Hangout: Shane T

A warm welcome to: holy nights, bad advice

First and foremost we would like to congratulate Shane T on the release of his highly anticipated EP, and all of its success thus far. Holy Nights, Bad Advice is certainly a game changer for the “Simple Man” artist. You get a sense of his true emotions, and the music behind it contibutes to a dream-like sensation that you feel upon listening.

After a small house show that he threw in his welcoming home in Nashville, TN we had the opportunity to interview him about his music and song writing process.

‘Wasting Time’

It is evident that the “Afterhours” artist knows how to write a good song, but just how it happens makes it all the more meaningful. His process varies, from coming up with a riff and playing it over and over to the lyrics coming to him after the core riffs of the song. Sometimes, his songs happen by accident and he went on to say, “Sometimes I’ll make a mistake and I’ll actually end up liking the way it sounds, so I build off of that”.

When it comes to the message of his songs, he never goes into it with an idea it typically just comes to him naturally. When he is finished writing, the meaning presents itself.

The inspiration behind Toriscelli’s latest EP came from a lot of different things. “A lot of it was inspired by relationship stuff, graduating and moving to a new city, and a huge portion came from films” he laughed and went on to say, “I mean I’m still inspired by movies I just don’t have access to MoviePass anymore”.

When asked about his most meaningful song that he has ever written, he smiled and answered, “It’s honestly always changing. I’ll release a song and then it doesn’t feel like it’s mine anymore. For the EP it’s probably the title track, “Holy Nights, Bad Advice”, because of the lyrics and the feel about it. It is a really serendipitous sound, and those are the ones I typically cling to the most”.

“These sins ain’t Sins They’re Friends Of Mine”

Torescelli eludes to religion in the majority of his songs. This is a topic many artists feel is taboo, but for the “Decline” artist, it is something he feels strongly about. Growing up, he was raised as a Christian, but his parents were always open and honest about their beliefs and doubts.

Torescelli opened up and spoke on this matter, saying, “When I went to college, I was still heavily involved in the church for a year and a half, and then I took a religion course and realized how small these bubbles were and how closed off the thinking was about what people had taught me growing up”.

So when it comes to his music he said, “A lot of what comes out in my songs is realizing that two-sided nature of growing up Christian and not knowing the other side of things. I was always taught what we [Christians] think is right, and everyone who disagrees is wrong and I just never listened to the other perspective”.

He is accepting of his upbringing, and uses it as inspiration for his songs and he went on to say, “I’m not in a separationist mindset, where I want to push all that [religion] away, it’s just framing it in a very different way than what I grew up thinking it should be framed like”.

Desert Island Bands

It didn’t take much time for the “Apartment Dream” singer to pick his ‘desert island’ bands/artist, but he meticulously chose the following;

  1. David Bowie
  2. Blink-182
  3. Tyler, The Creator

Final Thoughts

This Nashville native is bringing something new to the music scene; Shane T is a musician who isn’t afraid to take risks when it comes to his powerful lyrics and melodic tones. His newest release represents his ability to shift between sounds.

He wants his listeners to be able to take away different meanings from his lyrics and relate to them in a way that fits for them, he went on to explain, “I want them [listeners] to use their own unique experiences and take away what they will from that”.

You can find Shane T on all streaming services and keep up with him on Instagram: @shanetonline.

Christmas in August

Hello! Some of our friends and favorite artists released singles today and we wanted to give them the recognition they deserve, enjoy!

“Apartment Dream”- SHane T

We had the opportunity to sit down with Shane T and discuss his new single before he released it for the world to hear. To Shane, “Apartment Dream” is an interpretation of a dystopian style dream that he had. In his recollections, Shane explained that, “It was a feeling of being handcuffed by stresses about money to pursue dreams, like music.” This song embodies the worries and feelings about growing up, moving out, and going out into the real world.

This new single by Shane introduces the rest of his EP (out on August 16th). The theme of “Apartment Dream” is the sense that time is being wasted. He explained that “There is some humor in this single, but it has some of the most hard-hitting lines that I’ve ever written.” Shane described it as a good encompassing song for the rest of the album.

“Mudpies”- Fleur Geurl

Making a big comeback under her new name, Danielle from Fleur Geurl (previously known as Tom Angst), released a new single, “Mudpies.” This song uses various instruments, violin and trumpet played by Danielle’s friends, Wesley, and Dan. To us, this song emanates the feelings of summer and nostalgia. The variety of instruments, mixed with Danielle’s voice makes this song sound hauntingly beautiful.

Because of this new release, we are anticipating what Fleur Geurl has in store for her listeners next!

“Wysteria” – Nordista Freeze

Since his release of Cosmic Haus in 2017, fans of Nordista Freeze have been patiently waiting for his official release of “Wysteria.” If you have gotten the opportunity to see Freeze on tour recently, you would have heard “Wysteria” live, but everyone was excited for the chance to listen to it while dancing around their rooms.

This dreamy ballad makes you envision yourself swaying from side to side underneath the stars. Unlike the energy in some of Freeze’s other songs, “Wysteria” is a slow serenade that radiates the feelings of love.

“Sometimes Love Takes so long”- Illiterate Light

Illiterate Light has been on a roll with their song releases, and this single is no different. Since their release of “Carolina Lorelei” in May, listeners have been anticipating new music from the duo. Illiterate Light has been catching eyes and turning heads with their music and “Sometimes Love Takes So Long” has done just that.

This catchy tune portrays the feelings of a lost love. This heartfelt song is relatable and sincere and it makes us excited to see what these guys are going to do next! Keep an eye out for their debut album to be released on October 11th!

A HYPNOTIC HANGOUT: WHITEHALL

DOWNTOWN ALIVE!

JUNE 27, 2019– Downtown Greenville, SC was crawling with people; all of them rushing towards NOMA square for Downtown Alive!, a weekly festival hosted by the Metropolitan Arts Council. People crowded around a stage as Whitehall, an idie/rock band from Charleston, began to play.

The sun was beating down on the band as they played, but this didn’t stop the band from keeping the energy and crowd up. Many people began to dance around and cheer as the band played some originals like, “Flammable” and “Vacation Home”, and a few covers like “Dear Prudence” and “Stacy’s Mom”.

This group of four guys brings a type of energy that you can’t resist being apart of. They all contribute to the spark of happiness you get when you listen to their tuneful music. Their vigour combined with their sound, makes you want to bounce out of your seat and dance around.

NOT SO ‘WASTED’ TIME WITH WHITEHALL

Lucky for us, we got the opportunity to speak with the Ocean Fiction band and learn a little bit more about who they are.

The Charleston natives all met their freshman year of College of Charleston, and they have been a inseparable ever since. The reason they began the band in the first place is because of a previous member who thought forming a band would be cool (And he was totally right).

The name for the band was actually the hardest part of forming the band. Their lead singer Paddy laughed and stated, “We all had tons of ideas, but none of them were good. They were all awful, actually”.

The second part of forming a band would typically be finding the right sound, but accoring to their guitarist, Avery, they all contribute something, and it feels natural. He said, “When I listen to music, I listen to the actual music part and not much of the lyrics, and I appriciate that more. But, some of us are more into the lyric’s meaning. So, we all find something that inspires us and we go from there”.

DESERT ISLAND BANDS

We have a new segment where we ask bands what three bands they would want to be stuck on a desert island with. For Whitehall, a lot of thought went into their answers. Each of them had ideas for the vibe of their deserted island so they chose wisely. These are their answers:

  • Avery (guitar): The Clash, Pile, and Kendrick Lamar
  • Davis (drums): Dave Grohl, Katy Perry, and The Beatles
  • Paddy (vocals and guitar): John Mayer, Tom Petty, and The Rolling Stones
  • Brennan (bass): Miles Davis, Guns and Roses, and Queen

FInal Thoughts

Whitehall is a band made up of four of the sweetest guys, who make the grooviest tunes. They just finished up the second part of their ‘Pamplemousse’ tour. But, until their next tour you can stream their most recent album, Ocean Fiction and all of their other stuff on ALL music platforms.

‘Midnight’ – Tom Angst

In March, Tom Angst posted a music video for their song “Midnight”, for a long time we were anticipating the official release of the song, and we’re happy to say that it is finally available to stream on Spotify.

Hearts were broken when Tom Angst announced their breakup just recently. This morning the band released their last single “Midnight”, and also announced their last EP Matthew, which is to be realeased on Friday, June 14th. Upon listening to the song, we are confident that their sophomore EP will be just as good.

As far as the future of Tom Angst and its members goes, Danielle McConaghy promises fans that she has plans for her new project, Fleur Geurl. For now, you can stream “Midnight” and mark your calanders for the release of their last EP, Matthew, on June 14th.

Stay Groovy.
